This continuing education course will provide healthcare professionals with an in-depth understanding of diabetes and its impact on systemic, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal health. Participants will review the key differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including their underlying pathophysiology, risk factors, disease progression, and common treatment approaches. The course will also examine how diabetes may affect circulation, inflammation, healing, nerve function, pain perception, infection risk, and overall treatment outcomes. Discussion will include the importance of recognizing signs and symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes, obtaining accurate medical histories, monitoring patient safety, and modifying treatment approaches when necessary. Emphasis will also be placed on diabetic emergencies, patient education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based strategies to improve patient care and clinical outcomes for individuals with diabetes.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by describing their pathophysiology, risk factors, disease progression, and common medical management strategies.
- Identify the systemic, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal effects of diabetes, including its impact on circulation, inflammation, healing, nerve function, pain perception, infection risk, and treatment outcomes.
- Apply evidence-based clinical strategies to safely manage patients with diabetes by recognizing signs of uncontrolled diabetes and diabetic emergencies, modifying treatment approaches when appropriate, and promoting patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
