Course Description:

This continuing education course is designed to provide a practical understanding of the legal, ethical, and regulatory responsibilities involved in operating a healthcare practice. Participants will review common causes of clinical malpractice claims, methods to reduce liability exposure, and strategies for maintaining accurate documentation and informed consent. The course will also address essential business and employment law topics, including hiring practices, employee management, workplace policies, HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, discrimination prevention, and sexual harassment laws. Real-world case studies and risk management scenarios will be used to help participants strengthen compliance, improve patient and employee relations, and protect their practice from legal and financial risk.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: Identify common causes of malpractice claims and methods to reduce professional liability exposure. Recognize the importance of proper documentation, informed consent, and communication in defending against malpractice allegations. Discuss key legal principles related to practice ownership, contracts, and business operations. Review employer responsibilities regarding hiring, termination, workplace policies, and employee management. Explain federal and state employment laws that impact dental practices, including discrimination and wage-related regulations. Demonstrate an understanding of HIPAA privacy and security requirements related to patient records and protected health information. Identify common HIPAA violations and implement strategies to maintain compliance within the dental office. Define workplace sexual harassment and recognize behaviors that may create a hostile work environment. Review employer obligations for preventing harassment, discrimination, and retaliation in the workplace. Develop practical risk management protocols to improve legal compliance, workplace professionalism, and patient safety.
