Course Description

This course is designed for master electrical contractors who want to take a hard, practical look at how they run their business—and where it may be quietly costing them time, money, and growth. Participants will examine common self-inflicted obstacles, outdated business strategies, and missed opportunities that repeatedly undermine otherwise skilled contractors.

Through real-world discussion, this class explores identifying a clear niche, choosing whether installation or service should be the core strength of the company, and deciding when to streamline or consolidate trade services under one umbrella. The course also addresses leadership and culture, including employee engagement, communication, and creating a team environment where suggestions are valued and performance improves.

Marketing approaches will be evaluated with an emphasis on substance over talk, along with the ongoing importance of quality workmanship, the strategic use of warranties, and knowing when to walk away from unprofitable or questionable projects. Contractors will leave with practical insights to refine their business focus, strengthen operations, and make smarter decisions that support long-term success.

Instructor:
Shawn Gianella is a former multi tradesman who owned his service and contracting business for close to 3 decades. He was one of the youngest Electrical Inspectors in the State at the time. He started teaching in the 80’s and 90’s part time in public and private VoTechs. He emphasized the proper training of new workers and apprentices as a consultant for a trade publication in the early 90’s. He instructs with old timer solid methods in keeping one’s mind open and not just as someone writing on how to improve business that never spent a day in the trades. NJ Approved Instructor # 103.
