Morning Lecture:

Significance of Sustainable and Resilient Critical Infrastructure Systems: Time 8am to 12pm    4 PDU

Infrastructure is the set of structural elements that supports the day-to-day lives, and influences the direction of humanity. Most of our existing infrastructure (Including transportation) system are not sustainable and resilient. It is important to understand the significance of sustainable and resilient critical infrastructure systems. Sustainable and resilient critical infrastructure systems is an emerging thought in an evolving era of depleting natural and man-made assets to provide a sustainable and high quality of life with optimized resources from social, economic, societal and environmental considerations. Sustainable infrastructure refers to the designing, building, and operating of these structural elements in ways that do not diminish the social, economic and ecological processes required to maintain human equity, diversity, and the functionality of natural systems. Infrastructure resilience is the ability to reduce the magnitude and/or duration of disruptive events. The effectiveness of a resilient infrastructure or enterprise depends upon its ability to anticipate, absorb, adapt to, and/or rapidly recover from a potentially disruptive event. Sustainable infrastructure enhances quality of life for people, increases positive impacts (benefits), helps protect our vital natural resources and environment. The development of infrastructure systems that are sustainable and resilient is a challenging task that involves a broad range of performance indicators over the system lifecycle that affect system functionality and recovery. Sustainability indicators address economic, social, and environmental performance metrics and resilient indicators address strength, functionality, and recovery-time metrics following a hazard event. Considering above facts, it is high recommended to transform our existing infrastructure systems to be sustainable and resilient. Also, our newly developed critical infrastructure systems should be sustainable and resilient. The choice of infrastructure development is crucial to sustainable development because the infrastructure we are building today will shape our future communities to remain resilient.

Afternoon Lecture:

Structural Home Inspection Time: 12:30pm to 4:30pm   4 PDU’s

The presenter being registered professional engineer and home inspector in multiple states has performed multiple structural inspection of residential and commercial building. This presentation will include many real life examples of structural inspection of residential and commercial buildings. Every now and then, there is news of structural failures of different types of residential and commercial building. Some of the structural failures are due to improper structural inspection. It is imperative for home inspectors and or engineers to know the structural behavior of different types of residential and commercial building. It (this presentation) offers coverage of the concepts of analysis of structures. The various topics include basic structural analysis of beam, column, truss, frames etc. and their combinations. The analysis includes loading, shear force, bending moment, slope and deflection diagrams. This presentation also covers innovative methods to quickly analyze a complex building structure with real life examples and methods to avoid blunders in structural inspections. This presentation will include template of structural items which needs to be verified during structural inspection of residential and commercial buildings.
