Reinforcing Steel and Concrete Structural Inspection-
This seminar/presentation describes the basic concept of Reinforcing Steel and Concrete
Inspection. This seminar/presentation objective is to increase understanding of:
➔ Concrete proportioning
➔ Concrete reinforcing design & corroded steel repair
➔ Reinforcement placement, including field changes & methods of determining proper lap
splices for normal & seismic conditions
➔ Concrete placement, both on land & under water
➔ Concrete consolidation & finishing
➔ Concrete curing
These will be taught using in-class student exercises & examples from actual field conditions as
well as ACI suggested details.
The course presents practical information about field inspection of concrete reinforcing, including
descriptions of markings used to identify bar size, material type, & producing mill. Substitution of
different bars and different spacing is also discussed.
Bar placement and proper lap dimensions is reviewed for various footings, columns, wall, beams,
stairs and slabs. Reinforcement ties are included as well as bar placement for utility openings and
other holes in these structures.
This seminar/presentation describes the advanced concept of Reinforcing Steel and Concrete
Inspection. Avoiding Concrete Surface Imperfections & How to Fix Them
This course reviews how to eliminate concrete surface imperfections by: Identifying them,
Describing their causes, Suggesting methods of prevention
Pointing out ways to correct them.
The types of imperfections that will be analyzed and discussed in detail are:
Crazing, Dusting, Crusting, Flaking, Scaling, Blistering, Honeycombing, Pop-outs, Cracking, and

Mr. Avinash Prasad is a Licensed Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor with more than 25 years of civil engineering and project management experience. As a registered professional engineer and land surveyor (NJ, NY, CT, MA, RI), he specializes in bridge asset management and structural evaluation of bridges, particularly suspension bridges. He is currently researching bridge asset management for his doctoral dissertation at New York University. He has received dual MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Engineering Management from NJIT and a BS degree in Civil Engineering from India. He has more than 1000 hours of continuing professional education as instructor/participating professional. He is a NJ state certified emergency medical technician (EMT), emergency medical responder (EMR), and firefighter (FF). He is also a certified CPR, AED administer. He is a fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers and an active member of several professional organizations such as: AREMA, PMI, AISC, NYSAPLS, IPWE, IRT and IIBE. The ASCE, Railway Age and Railway Track & Structure conference proceedings has accepted many of his technical papers for presentation and/or publication.
