Course Objective:
This LIVE IN-PERSON course will begin with a basic overview of the musculoskeletal system along with common ailments of the system and then concentrate on the preventative measures of exercises that can aid in the prevention and treatment of such ailments. The course will be taught in a facilitator type style (versus lecture), where the instructor will work interactively with the attendees to cover the material. Special attention will be given to parts or ailments of the musculoskeletal system that are of most interest to attendees.

Upon completion of this class, participants should be able to:
Identify any part of the musculoskeletal system
Understand common ailments to the musculoskeletal system
Understand how aerobic, anaerobic and stretching exercise programs can be used to prevent or treat such ailments
Perform exercises for these purposes
Develop an age and gender specific exercise plan for patient/client

Method of Instruction: Facilitator-led Discussion, Some Hands-On Activities

Supplies:  Please bring a floor mat and/or towel to use for any floor activities.

Course Outline:

• Review of the musculoskeletal system including the general structure, function and type of bones, joints and muscles. Topics will be determined by the attendees.

• Discussion of common ailments of the musculoskeletal system

• Discussion of prevention methods to avoid common ailments of the system. Specifically, various forms of exercises will be discussed in terms of effects on the musculoskeletal system and how to develop programs. Some light practical experience may occur (i.e. light anaerobic and stretching).

 Aerobic Exercise
• True effects on the energy systems of different aerobic exercises
• Variations in aerobic exercise and the difference on the musculoskeletal system.
• Physiology and biomechanics behind aerobic exercise.
 Anaerobic Exercises
• Weight training (strength vs. endurance)
• Plyometrics
• Other forms of anaerobic exercises
• Physiology and biomechanics behind anaerobic exercise.
 Stretching
• Static vs. Dynamic vs. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation
• Physiology and biomechanics behind anaerobic exercise.
• Develop an “exercise prescription”
 How to test, evaluate and develop an age and gender appropriate exercise program for patient/client

About the Instructor: Jason Wicke, PhD

Dr. Jason Wicke is a full-time Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at William Paterson University. He has a PhD in Biomechanics with many years of education and experience in human development and motion, kinesiology and sports science.  An expert in his field, Dr. Wicke has authored or co-authored over 15 publications, some of which have been published in the Journal of Biomechanics, Perceptual and Motor Skills and other professional journals.
