Course Description:
The course will address managerial aspects of contracting, including the relationship of firms to contractors. Topics will include time and scheduling, project delivery, and the management process.
Communication and documentation will be addressed. Issues during construction and labor relations will be addressed as well. The bidding process will be discussed as well as the decision process, the players and the bid opening.
Value engineering and when it can be applied, the subject of risk assessment, and organization setup will be reviewed. Materials for a project will be evaluated as well as changed conditions,
Instructor: Alan R. Slaughter, P.E.- Professional Engineer and Professional Planner
Alan has over 47 years experience in civil engineering and construction. Fields of work include project management on design and construction of highway, bridge, tunnel, historical, site, geotechnical and construction management projects. He is Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Shaft and tunnel Resident Engineer for the Manhattan portion of the NYCDEP Water Tunnel No.3 project in Manhattan. Project was worth approximately $700,000,000 and involves the construction of 10 – 500 ft. deep shafts and 9 miles of 10 ft. diameter tunnels.
Latest assignment, served as a Quality Control Engineer on a bridge project. Assembled a Contractor’s Quality Plan as well as numerous forms for documentation of the work. Reviewed daily reports. In addition to the years of experience in hands on civil engineering, adjunct teaching has been performed by Alan for 22 years at the New Jersey Institute of Technology
